Taylor Swift considers legal action against student monitoring her private jet

Jack Sweeney, a student who utilizes public data to monitor the flights of celebrities’ private jets, has encountered legal threats from Taylor Swift’s attorneys for disseminating her flight details online. Sweeney, who posts the takeoff and landing information of the affluent’s aircraft with a one-day delay, has been accused by Swift’s legal team of engaging in behavior equivalent to “stalking.”

Following an incident in 2022 where Twitter suspended Sweeney after Elon Musk claimed he was posting his “assassination coordinates,” Swift’s legal representatives have sent Sweeney, a 21-year-old University of Central Florida student, a cease-and-desist letter in December. The letter demands that he cease publishing the whereabouts of Swift’s private jet, stating the shared information constitutes a “serious threat to Swift’s safety and security,” emphasizing the gravity of the situation as a matter of life or death.

Highlighting Swift’s past encounters with stalkers, the letter argues that such information provides potential criminals with a “blueprint to execute their malicious intentions.” Although the BBC hasn’t independently verified the letter, its details have been reported by American media outlets.

Responding to the BBC, Sweeney expressed no intention of causing harm and professed admiration for Swift’s music. He suggested that the timing of the legal threat coincided with media scrutiny over Swift’s environmental impact, notably after she was identified in 2022 as the celebrity with the highest private jet carbon emissions by Yard, a digital marketing agency.

Amidst these events, a 33-year-old man was arrested for stalking outside Swift’s residence last month. Swift’s spokeswoman, Tree Paine, implied a link between the posts about Swift’s jet and the timing of stalkers’ actions, stating they precisely indicate Swift’s whereabouts.

Swift’s travel activities have garnered increased attention, especially with her ongoing concert tour and her planned travel to Las Vegas for the NFL Super Bowl to support her boyfriend, the day following her concert in Tokyo. Sweeney’s posts, however, do not specify the identities of the passengers or their destinations upon landing. He has also tracked the private jets of other notable figures such as Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg.
